Yes you need to add the CD/DVD to the Virtual Machine and once done you can then try installing VMware Tools and it should automatically assign the linux.iso file to the CD/DVD and then to install VMware Tools in a Linux VM follow the direction in the Help File.

 

BTW You didn't say what your Host OS and version was or what version of Ubuntu or version of VMware Workstation and in some cases you may need to apply a third party patch to get all functionality of VMware Tools to work properly!
