Re: 3ware 9650SE - not supported in ESXi 6?

I would like to add to this discussion in that I DID get my 3ware 9650se-4lpml to work in ESXi 6.0.

I followed the instructions in this thread install from the command line:  Get the 3ware 9650SE working with ESXi 5.x | jermsmit.com - Jermal Smith

I used these 2 driver files:

aacraid-1.2.1.40709-2422670.zip - uploaded from the zip for install:  vmware-esxi-drivers-scsi-aacraid-600.6.2.1.40709.-1.0.6.2159203.x86_64.vib

esxi5u1_driver_LSI_3ware_96xx,zip - uploaded:  scsi-3w-9xxx-2.27.08.036-1OEM.500.0.0.472560.x86_64.vib

After installing the drivers and rebooting, the ESX host recognized the raid card and I was able to create datastores on both a Mirror Raid and a Single Drive connected to the card.  ESX does not seem to notice when pulling a drive from the Mirror array though.

If anyone figures out how to monitor the raid status, that would be awesome.

HP MSA 2040 iSCSI -- SRM fails on Recover and Reprotect operations.

Does anyone have any practical experience with the HP MSA 2040 iSCSI SAN, DL360p G8 servers running VMware 5.5 and SRM 5.8.  We have the HP MSA SRA 5.8.0.24 installed, and the MSA runs firmware GL200P002. We have deployed VMware 5.5 U1 in 2 sites on HP DL360p G8 servers direct connected TO MSA 2040 iSCSI SANs.  The intent is to use HP Remote Snap ARRAY enabled replication, with SRM 5.8 to manage the recovery and reprotect.  We've installed the hardware, networked the iSCSI, installed vmware, installed the SRM and SRA, configured the remote SANs and setup volume replication.  That all works as expected. When we run a test recovery, that is successful. When we run a real Recovery, we get error messages and find additional information in the sra log file that indicates an incomplete command, referencing unidentified initiators.  Volumes and VMs are left in a transient state and it is a mess to cleanup.  It appears the command.pl file in the installed sra version 5.8.0.24 does not properly detect that the volumes were Default mapped and builds the command using the Explicit mapping format.  That fails as there are no values for the referenced initiators.  We made a minor edit to the command.pl file to not include initiators, and that allowed the Recovery operation to complete successfully.  Reprotect fails miserably and we are past the range of being able to troubleshoot this further.  We've since switched to explicit mapping and reverted the command.pl file to remain 100% original.  Has anyone ever setup vmware SRM with MSA2040 array based replication and been successful with the Recovery and Reprotect operations.  Since the MSA2000 uses the same SRA, that configuration should be a valid comparable.  As a side note, we have setup vmware replication and can run recovery and reprotect successfully.  The 15 minute replication cycle is not acceptable for this particular application, so we need to figure out array replication. Any advice welcome.

How to set disk space monitors to only check VMs in certain resource pools?

Hi Guys,

Is there a way to create a disk space monitor in vops that only checks certain resource pools?

For example, I'm only interested in checking resource pools named "office-machines" on each host. I'd like to exclude resource pools named "dev-machines"

TIA!

Installing in a Hyper-V VM

Hello all,

I am looking for a way to install ESXi in a Hyper-V VM. I understand that this 'defeats the purpose' - but really what I am trying to do is setup a lab for testing. There are various instructions online regarding the installation of ESXi 5.5 in a Hyper-V, see:

Vmware ESXI within Hyper-v (server 2012) networking issue

I went through the entire thread and was actually able to import the tulip driver into the 6.0 ISO and *successfully* installed ESXi into the Hyper-V VM.

The issue I am having is that I am unable to ping the IP of the ESXi host VM and obviously unable to download the tools package at http://IP_OF_THE_VM

I am using a Hyper-V VM with 8GB of Ram allocated, 2vCPUs, and a legacy network adapter (external virtual switch).

Perhaps the driver that was packaged for the 5.5 version does not work with 6.0? Any known workarounds?

Thanks

Hi All,

VCO does not show workflow runs or workflow tokens any more for ASD workflows. It used to show before. Any help appreciated.

Re: Can't add ESX 6.0 host to vCenter 6.0 Server

OK, after working with VMware on this issue, I think I figured it out.

All my hosts are DL360 G6 Servers.

All my hosts are run the same build ESX from "VMware-ESXi-6.0.0-2494585-HP-600.9.2.38-Mar2015.iso". Downloaded from HP.

All builds are in Evaluation mode.

After placing a call to VMware, they had me build some ESX VM's, platform services and vcenter VM's on an ESX host. We hung up because it took all day to spin up.

Once I got all the pieces (sql server, esx vm's, platform server & vcenter) up in the nested virtualization, I created my Datacenter, then Cluster then added the ESX hosts.

The hosts added fine, no errors. Then I remembered when I installed ESX inside a VM, I got upset that the iso I used from HP wouldn't work in my nested VM because of the virtualized hardware.

Then a the light came on in my head. Let's rebuild the entire physical cluster but NOT use the HP provided iso file but use the VMware provided iso file "VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.0.0-2159203.x86_64.iso".

I did that today. I rebuilt all the ESX hosts with the VMware provided iso file.....

Spun up all the required VM's SQL Server, Platform Services VM, vCenter VM. My AD & DNS VM's are on another server so it's been up the whole time.

Logged into the web interface (Yuck!).

Created my Datacenter....

Created My Cluster....

Added all the hosts to my Cluster.

It all worked!!!!

So, if you are experiencing the same issue I am, consider building your ESX hosts with the VMware provided iso file and try it. In my case, the HP provided iso file did not function properly for me.

I also downloaded the HP iso file 2 other times to make sure and do a sanity check and it did the same thing.

All,

I figured out the issue. After enabling 'Source' Port Mirroring in my Hyper-V VM - I was able to ping the VM and access the tools page.

In case anybody is looking for basic instructions:

1) Download fresh ESXI 6.0 ISO

2) Download ESXi-Customizer (http://www.v-front.de/p/esxi-customizer.html)

3) Download Tulip VIB for Hyper-V NICs (see attached)

4) Create 1st Gen Hyper-V VM (Decent amount of RAM, 2vCPUs, 10GB VHD, **Legacy Network Adapter** ) (2nd Generation VM = Frozen Install for me)

5) Configure the 'Legacy Network Adapter' with 'Mac Spoofing' enabled and Port Mirroring set to 'Source'

6) Use the customizer to rebuild the ISO with the attached VIB

7) Mount newly created ISO to DVD in VM

8) Install ESXI 6.0

9) Enjoy testing

If you are in an environment with no monitor / peripherals - you will need to boot with ' ignoreHeadless=TRUE' appended to the command line (SHIFT+O). If you get stuck at 'Relocating Modules' - this should fix that.

To make this permanent after install execute:

esxcfg-advcfg -k TRUE ignoreHeadless

I'd love to hear if anybody else has similar use cases or issues while setting this up.

Thanks

Hi Daniel,

I can't comment specifically on roadmaps on this alias.  Rest assured that it is an important use case for us.

ALT-TAB in Windows 7 while running unity not switching input focus

I am running Workstation 11.1.0 build-2496824 under Windows 7 with an Ubuntu 64-bit VM.

When I switch the VM to Unity mode and use the KEY BOARD to switch between running applications (even when the last application was in the VM) the current input focus does not follow the window focus.  As I am mostly a keyboard user, having to continually reach for the mouse is a royal pain. My Desktop Environment in the VM is KDE.

Have I configured something incorrectly?

I would default to the supported version of vSAN rather than the HP recommendation.  For instance we had vSAN on 5.5. No issues at all.  Then we upgraded to vSAN 6 which included a LSI update to firmware.  No issues at all.  We re-did the cluster with vSAN 5.5 without downgrading the firmware and we shortly saw disks disappearing and reappearing.  We downgraded the firmware to the supported vSAN 5.5 version and the issues went away.

In my experience, the HCL rules it all.  Thank you, Zach.

I don't believe RAID0 vs Pass Through will change the 895 queue depth.

I would also do the rolling migration from Pass Through to RAID0.  Especially if you have at least 4 hosts to always have FTT = 1.  Thank you, Zach.

Re: vSphere FT slow down the primary VM

I'm afraid LACP will be of no use for FT, because you have a fixed socket of source and destination IP (and MAC), and possibly a single layer 4 connection as well. In this case the hashing algorithm will always select a single link for all packets.

What's even more important than raw bandwidth would be latency though. The hosts aren't separated over longer distances, are they?

Having issues installing guest OS on VMware ESXi ?? It keeps loading from PXE ??

After spending a couple of hours scratching my head- trying to figure out what's stopping my Vsphere to install an OS from an ISO, I finally found the answer.

The DNS IP on client machine was different to what the Vsphere host had. Once I adjusted my client DNS, issue resolved & happy days.

Check DNS IP on host in configuration>DNS and Routing and you can edit by clicking on properties..

DNS on client can be checked/edited from LAN settings..

If you are trying to install an OS from ISO from a client and having similar issues then it is worthwhile checking the above...

Re: Vsphere 5.0 client works over network, but not through SSH tunnel

Can I force SRM 5.0 with SRDF/SRA 5.0.1 to recover at target site when source datastores report they are unprotected?

$

SRDF/A  (latest VMAX 5876 code)

SRM 5.0

SRDF/SRA 5.0.1

vCenter 5.0

We are moving the target VMAX to a loaner VMAX target (where we will not use SRM) and then we will move back to the original VMAX (after it is moved).  We are using Concurrent SRDF to populate the loaner Datastores (R2 devices).

When we introduced Concurrent SRDF for the VMAX protected vm Datastores, SRM broke down, reporting that the vm's are not on protected Datastores.  This was due to the SRA version in place (5.0.1), which does not support Concurrent SRDF.

We unconfigured the Concurrent SRDF leg, and SRM recovered from its error state.

Here's my question: if we had a DR event (loss of Compute/Storage/Network) while Concurrent SRDF is enabled, and SRM is in an error state, and if the source side SRM server were unavailable due to the DR event, could we do one of the following:

                1) use the DR side SRM server to "force" a vm recovery

                                - perhaps by manually enabling the SRDF link

                2) manually recover the vm's (not using SRM) by manually enabling SRDF and by manually inventorying vm's

Thank you!

Looks like there is an issue with the SSL cert to the endpoint.

Check the endpoint you are deploying to ie : vcenter

Go to networking and make sure the endpoint has a trusted cert and test the connection

Check the VCAC logs for additional issues.

Does the workflow envoke the correct workflow in VCO? You should be able to login to VCO and see that there are  running or failed tasks.
